Hijama Aftercare: What to Do in the First 24 Hours After Cupping
So you’ve just had your hijama session — what happens next? The first 24 hours after cupping matter more than most people realise. Good aftercare helps your body settle, keeps the small sites clean, and helps you get the most from your session. At Hijamah Center Karachi in Dastagir, we talk every client through aftercare before they leave the clinic, but it’s easy to forget the details once you’re home. This guide covers rest, hydration, food, activity and cup-mark care — plus the signs that mean you should message us straight away.
Rest & Hydration
Your body has just been through a process that stimulates circulation, so the simplest advice is also the most important: rest. For the first few hours after your session, don’t rush back into a hectic schedule. Sit down, relax, and give yourself permission to take it easy. Most clients feel pleasantly calm after hijama, and a short rest helps that feeling settle in.
Hydration is the other half of the equation. Drink plenty of plain water for the rest of the day — more than you usually would. Water supports normal circulation and helps you recover comfortably. Herbal tea is fine too, but keep it simple: skip sugary drinks and energy drinks, which work against the calm your body needs right now. Keep a water bottle nearby and sip steadily until bedtime.
Eating & Drinking
Eat light, warm and simple. After cupping, heavy, oily or very spicy food can leave you feeling sluggish, so choose easy-to-digest meals — khichdi, dal with rice, soup or lightly cooked vegetables are all good options, and fresh fruit is fine as well. Try to eat your main meal a little earlier than usual so your body isn’t working hard on digestion late at night.
Avoid alcohol and smoking for at least 24 hours, since both can slow the body’s natural recovery. Strong caffeinated drinks are best limited too — one normal cup of chai is fine for most people, but save the extra-strong coffee for the next day. If you take regular medication, continue it exactly as your doctor prescribed. Hijama is a traditional, complementary practice — never a replacement for medical treatment. When in doubt, ask your doctor.
Activity: What to Avoid
For the first 24 hours, skip anything strenuous: no gym sessions, no heavy lifting and no intense sports. Gentle walking is fine — a short, easy stroll can actually feel good — but save the workout for the day after tomorrow. Pushing hard too soon can leave you feeling drained.
Also avoid long hot baths, saunas and swimming for 24 hours. Keep the cupped areas clean and dry while the small sites close up. A lukewarm shower is fine — just don’t scrub the marks. And try to get to bed at a reasonable hour; good sleep is one of the best things you can give your body after a session.
Caring for the Cup Marks
The round marks left by the cups are completely normal — a sign of the suction, not an injury. If you had wet cupping, the tiny incision sites need the same simple care: don’t pick at any light scabbing, and let them heal on their own. You don’t need special creams or ointments — just keep the area clean, wear loose, comfortable clothing so nothing rubs against the marks, and avoid perfumed lotions on them for a day or two. The marks fade on their own over the coming days.
Planning your next visit around the Sunnah dates? Give the marks from your last session time to fade fully before booking again — most clients wait a few weeks between sessions.
When to Message Us
Hijama is a safe, well-established practice when performed by a trained therapist with proper hygiene — every session at our clinic uses single-use sterile equipment. Still, your peace of mind matters. Message us on WhatsApp at +92 335 1214919 if anything worries you: unusual swelling, increasing pain, or any sign of infection around the sites. We’d rather hear from you and put your mind at ease than have you sit at home wondering. You can also browse our FAQs for quick answers to common questions.
FAQs
Can I go to work after hijama?
If your work isn’t physically demanding, yes — many clients return to office work the same day. If you can, though, take the rest of the day easy and hydrate well. Listen to your body.
How soon can I exercise again?
Wait at least 24 hours before anything strenuous; 48 hours is even better. Light walking is fine from the start.
Is it normal to feel tired after cupping?
Yes — mild tiredness or deep relaxation is common and usually passes with rest, water and a good night’s sleep. If fatigue feels extreme or doesn’t lift, check in with us or your doctor.
