Understanding Cup Marks: What’s Normal After Hijama?

If it’s your first time having hijama, the round marks left behind can be surprising — some clients even worry something went wrong. Nothing could be further from the truth: cup marks are a normal, expected part of cupping, whether you’ve had wet cupping or dry cupping. Here’s what’s happening under the skin, what normal marks look like, how long they last, and how to look after them — the same guidance we give every client at Hijamah Center Karachi in Dastagir.

Why Marks Appear

Cupping works through suction: the cups create gentle negative pressure that draws blood toward the surface of the skin. This brings tiny capillaries close to the surface and leaves a round mark the exact size of the cup. Think of it as the visible sign that the suction did its job — not as bruising from an injury. The marks are painless for most people and don’t indicate any damage to the skin.

It’s worth knowing that the colour of the marks doesn’t diagnose anything — despite claims you may read online, darker marks don’t prove “more toxins” were drawn out. They’re simply the result of suction and your individual skin response, nothing more.

What’s Normal

Normal cup marks share a few traits:

  • Round and cup-sized: each mark matches the rim of the cup used.
  • Colour varies: light pink, red or deeper reddish-purple are all common — the shade differs from person to person, and even from one area of the back to another.
  • Mild tenderness: the area may feel slightly tender to the touch for a day or two, similar to a mild bruise.
  • Slight itching as they fade: a little itchiness while the marks clear is normal — try not to scratch.

What matters most is the trend: marks should steadily lighten and fade, not darken or spread. If you’re comparing your marks with photos online, remember that lighting and skin tone change how marks look in pictures — what you see in the mirror is what counts, and steady fading is the sign that all is well.

How Long They Last

For most people, cup marks fade within a few days to two weeks. How long yours last depends on your skin, the suction level used and how many cups were placed — deeper colouring can take a little longer to clear, and that’s still normal. They fade gradually, often lightening from the edges inward, and they don’t leave scars. Marks from dry cupping and wet cupping fade on roughly the same timeline, since the marks come from the suction rather than the incisions.

If you’re planning an event where you’d rather not show marks, mention it when you book and we’ll help you time your session sensibly. Try to be patient with the process — picking at scabs or scrubbing the area to make marks fade faster usually backfires and irritates the skin.

Aftercare for the Marks

Looking after cup marks is simple:

  • Keep the area clean and dry for the first 24 hours.
  • Wear loose clothing so nothing rubs against the marks.
  • Skip perfumed lotions on the marks for a day or two.
  • Don’t pick at any light scabbing on incision sites — let them heal naturally.
  • Lukewarm showers only — avoid scrubbing the marks, and skip hot baths, saunas and swimming for 24 hours.

No special creams or treatments are needed. If you’d like the full picture, read our hijama aftercare guide covering the first 24 hours after your session.

When to Ask Us

Cup marks themselves are harmless, but contact us if you notice anything outside the normal pattern: increasing pain rather than easing tenderness, spreading redness or swelling, any discharge, or a fever. These are uncommon — especially with proper sterile technique, and every session at our clinic uses single-use sterile equipment — but we’d always rather you check in. Most questions we receive about marks turn out to have simple, reassuring answers. Message us on WhatsApp at +92 335 1214919 and we’ll advise you promptly.
